Not exactly the way to learn best - through gritted teeth. We all feel our pain.) The only benefit to the web client, is that it forces me to use PowerCLI or my VMA options. (I will spare you any further litany of griefs. Frequent crashes, minimal feedback, blah blah blah. I actually signed up for an account because I needed to vent. VMware need to slow the hell down and fix this kind of stuff IMHO.

and then you find there's a number of bolt-on products that you use, which don't even have a web client plugin available for them yet.

So you have VMware ordering you to use the web client, telling you that the full fat client is deprecated. My biggest issue with VMware generally at the moment is that they're developing (well, acquiring) so many new products all of the time, stuff is continally out of sync. I don't look forward to having to use it in production. thanks HP!) but the times I have used it, I've just thought how much more painful it was than using the full fat client. I've not spent a lot of time using it (as we're predominantly ESXi 5.0 in our place - we had planned to jump right to 5.5 but HP decided to shaft us by not supporting quite a few servers that we have, on 5.5. Yes, this interface is nowhere near as mature as the fat client, but it's only been around for a year or two, as compared to the fat client.

Purchasing licensing for software that Finance people don't want you to use anymore is like pulling teeth from a very irate lion. But if VMware wants to keep those contracts, they have to have an interface that is platform agnostic. Governments and corporations have gone over to Red Hat and Canonical (Ubuntu) rather than keep using Microsoft. A lot of companies and governments are shifting off of Windows. Just build a single client that everybody can use, and be done with it.Īnd this does need to happen.

No need to start work on a Mac OS X client, no need to start work on a Linux client. This makes things easier for dev, because they only have to develop a single client. It works on Linux, it works on Mac OS X, and it works on Windows. Web GUIs are, by definition, platform agnostic.

I'd have to double-check.īut to answer your question as to why, there's a couple of reasons. With 6, it's going to outright not work, IIRC. I still use the thick client on a Windows View client.
